Dress Trends Surpass Time

When it comes to vintage dresses, there are such a vast number of styles and designs that are still highly stylish that many current designers have incorporated these styles into their current lines. Many of the techniques and trends used in past dress designs will always be used in upcoming dress lines. The vintage dress market has become incredibly popular and many outlets have prospered dealing in rare dresses. There are even some shops that sell remakes of fashionable designs and provide these frocks for festive galas like weddings and proms.

Many vintage dresses will only fit certain occasions like costume parties and themed affairs but there are some vintage designs that can be worn as daily attire as well. These vintage frocks can be worn just like any other dress and are remarkably beautiful but are harder to find. There are also great finds for special occasions and many women look for these elegant, classic designs because of the originality and unique appeal

Time Lines

Vintage dresses actually refer to multiple eras from Victorian styles to the 1970’s boho and disco concepts. Victorian styles offer that classic, graceful look that is usually worn to higher end events and is also used in gowns. The princess styles and slimmer fitting dresses with trains seemed to survive the era and are still used in current designs.

1920's

The 1920s brought flapper dresses and designs that covered up the body instead of enhancing them. The boyish styles of dresses in the Roaring Twenties were countered with the sleeveless options and shorter knee length hemlines that eventually became embellished with asymmetric patterns. These dresses are comparable to shift or sack dresses.

1930's

Dresses took a more feminine turn in the 1930s with designs that showed off curves and cinched waists. Day dresses were slimming with intricate bodices and evening gowns were glamorous with varying designs.

1940's

The 1940s was about wartime rationing which also included clothing. Even with limits designs that came out of here remained feminine with emphasis on the waist and curves. Also classier Hollywood glam start to appear and many dresses of the era are perfect for shirt dresses that can be worn to work

1950's

After wartime, the 1950s ushered a culmination of various designs and the major designers of the time started to really enhance their creations. Styles that were introduced in the 1950s included A-line and pencil skirts and the very favorable empire waist that is still used in current designs. Flared out skirts were dominant throughout the period.

1960's

Most of the trends and styles of the 1950s followed into most 1960’s. Dresses took a major turn with the advent of the mini dress with a very short hemline. The mini really opened dress designs with increased body hugging creations that showed off more skin at the legs and arms. Lilly Pulitzer also made a major splash with her very appealing shift dress that still takes precedence every now and then.

1970's

The 1970s featured many A-line and princess styles silhouettes but the patterns of the dresses were extremely notable. Floral, disco, sparkling, and livelier patterns were used in dresses during this period.
