Don't be THAT Girl at the Wedding

bad wedding dresses Weddings are a fabulous time to celebrate the union of special people in your life. They are also a fun excuse to get dressed up!

You don't want to end up being THAT girl at the wedding. You know which one I'm talking about. The one that other guests are whispering about: "I can't believe she wore that dress!"

If you are invited to a wedding, choosing a dress can be fun. To start off, you need to be clear about what type of wedding you are attending. The wedding invitation should give you an indication. Some invitations will spell it out for you, while with others you will have to look for clues. Obviously a wedding held at a ritzy country club will be more formal than one at a backyard BBQ.

Black Tie

If the wedding is "black tie" that means the men are expected to wear tuxedos and the women should wear formal dresses. Beads, sequins and glitz are perfectly suitable for a black tie wedding. Select a floor-length gown complemented with a beaded evening bag, high heels and sparkling jewelry.

If the invitation indicates "black tie optional," you can be a little less formal if you'd like. A tea length cocktail dress or a floor-length dress is safe choices.

Evening Wedding

If it's an evening wedding but not black tie, dress as if you were going out to dinner at a nice restaurant.

A cocktail dress or a dressy suit is good options. Wear dark colors - even black is appropriate. However, don't wear sequins, beads or other shiny embellishments unless it's black tie.

Daytime Wedding

If the invitation indicates it's a formal wedding in the daytime; a light colored suit is your best option. Add a fancy hat and a pair of pumps to finish your look. You can also wear a sophisticated dress that is knee-length. Pastels are perfect. Don't wear dark colors if the event is before 6:00 p.m.

If the invitation indicates it's less than formal, a floral print dress is appropriate for a daytime wedding in the spring or summer, while a sweater dress or skirt and sweater are suitable for colder months.

Outdoor Wedding

More and more couples are taking their weddings outdoors. If you are attending a garden wedding, beach wedding or other outdoor wedding, more casual attire is usually your best bet. Select a fun, colorful dress that is just above knee-length or longer. Wear flat shoes if you are going to be on the sand or grass.

Other Tips for Choosing a Dress

Don't wear anything too revealing. Even if you looking for a man at the wedding reception, a slinky, low-cut dress is inappropriate. It's good to look feminine and a little sexy. It's not good to look sleazy.

Wear something from this decade. If you haven't bought a new dress in years, it's time to buy one. You don't want to look outdated and old-fashioned. Look for a classic style in a suitable length that you can wear for several occasions.

Make sure it fits. A dress that is too tight or inappropriate for your body type isn't acceptable at a wedding. If your dress doesn't fit properly, head to the tailor to get alterations. The same goes if it's too big. A baggy dress will make you look frumpy and bigger than you are.

When shopping for a dress, bring someone with you who is also attending the wedding. Together you can decide what is appropriate for the occasion, as well as what looks good on you. After all, you don't want to be THAT girl!
